Merchant Category Codes

Merchant Category Codes (MCC) are 4 digit numbers used by the payments industry to classify businesses by market segment.

At WePay, we use a similar code to help us better understand your business. Below is the list of MCCs that we use to classify your merchants’ accounts. See the USDA website if a code relevant to your business is not listed here. You can use these codes as the mcc parameter in the /account/create call.

Codes

The MCCs listed here are available across all supported currencies and merchant locations. With the most recent update in July 2021, no MCCs that were previously available have been removed; this update is purely additive, making more MCCs available for use.

MCCs preceded by an asterisk symbol (*) require a primary_url when making the /account/kyc/create call, regardless if primary_url is listed as optional in the KYC structure.

MCCs preceded by two asterisk symbols (**) can only be used by accounts with a legal_form of one of the following:

  • nonprofit_corporation
  • unincorporated_association
  • charity
  • charity_incorporated_organisation
  • charity_unincorporated_association
  • club_or_society

Merchant Category Codes

The eFundYourHealth Debit Card limits the use of the card to approved Merchant Category Codes.

What are Merchant Category Codes?

Merchant Category Codes (MCC) are set by the major credits (payment card industry) and universally used by all major credit cards. MCCs are 4-digit numbers assigned to a business’ primary activity when they first register to accept credit cards.

An example, the code for Medical Services and Health Practitioners (Not Elsewhere Classified) is 8099.

Who can accept the eFundYourHealth Debit Card?

Our debit card is similar to other debit card. It works anywhere VISA is accepted.

The only difference is we limit the use of the card based on Merchant Category Codes (MCC).

An example, you will be able to purchase services from the MCC 8099, which is the code for Medical Services and Health Practitioners (Not Elsewhere Classified). However, you will not be able to make a purchase from MCC 7832, which are movie theaters.

Time Protocol

China Standard Time (UTC+08) is used in this document. If the Merchant is not in this time zone, they should convert their current time into China Standard Time. For instance, if a merchant is in London at the local time of November 11, 2014 0:00, it will be November 11, 2014 8:00 AM in Beijing.

Timestamp

Taking China Standard Time (UTC+08) as the standard time zone, a timestamp is calculated as seconds since 1970/01/01 00:00:00 UTC and is the required method to store timestamps in this document.

Note: Milliseconds should be rounded to seconds (10-digits).

Merchant’s Order Number

The order number for a payment is defined by the merchant and must be unique. We suggest adding a random sequence to the end of the current time in order to create a unique and sequenced number. The original order number is used when initiating a payment again in order to avoid duplicate transactions. However, orders that are paid, closed or revoked cannot be paid again.

Some special standards are required for field “body” when calling the WeChat Payment APIs:

Visa B2B Rates

Visa announces new interchange rate for B2B merchants.

Business-to-Business: Transactions eligible for the B2B rate must be CPS qualified (not qualifying for Level 2 rates) and be processed by merchants operating in qualified Merchant Category Codes (MCCs). Transactions with the qualifying MCCs can be face-to-face or accepted in a card not present environment. Visa considered many factors when selecting the eligible MCCs including, but not limited to, fostering growth in under-penetrated market segments and providing a lower rate for merchants in these categories as they tend to have higher degrees of commercial spending versus consumer spending.

Visa will review MCC eligibility periodically to ensure that the appropriate categories are targeted and aligned with the goals of increasing Visa acceptance and fostering growth in Visa volume. The eligible MCCs are:
